They have to acquire their multicolored glimmer by eating bioluminescent bacteria. Then, the bacteria form colonies in their bodies, and that creates the beautiful glowing rainbow patterns…

Basically, Bobtail Squid are the beautiful germ-filled mini-monsters of the sea.
