Analysis and reflection about “Stay close to me” and the link with Victuuri relationship.

I think that “Stay Close to Me” from Yuri on Ice is the key to understanding Viktor and Yuuri relationship, their building connection and Viktor’s true feelings.

As we know, this composition was the first one played in the show. When I heard it for the first time, I easily caught the lyrics because it is in my mother language and it amused me.
I realize that EVERY WORD in this song was not random but has a function, so I’ll try to analyse it.

This song is a dialogue in which is told us a story; a story of someone who doesn’t believe in love but suddenly finds his own.

But wait, let’s see what the song says sentence from sentence.

Sento una voce che piange lontano/I hear a voice crying far away
Anche tu sei stato forse abbandonato/Have you been abandoned as well?

The song start with a meeting: the main character notices that there is someone far away with his same loneliness and sadness.
The first thing that someone who understands Italian can notice is that the main character, the one singing , IS REFERENCING TO A MALE INTERLOCUTOR.
We can see it from the use of a masculine form “…stato….abbandonato…” that will last throughout the song. This is very indicative; we know well that in Yuri on Ice the composition for the routines explain about the skaters and it means that VIKTOR CHOSE TO EXPRESS HIMSELF WITH A LOVE SONG BETWEEN TWO GUYS.

Orsù finisca presto questo calice di vino/Come now, let’s empty this glass of wine soon
Inizio a prepararmi/I’ll start getting ready
Adesso fa’ silenzio/Now be silent.

These lines are not completely clear: The main character (who I assume is Viktor) seems reluctant and is trying to end what is happening soon as possible. He is asking to take his time and be left alone.

Con una spada vorrei tagliare/With a sword I wish I could cut
Quelle gole che cantano d’amore/Those throats singing about love
Vorrei serrar nel gelo le mani /I wish I could seal in the cold the hands
Che esprimono quei versi d’ardente passione/That portray those verses of burning passion

We have an explication of our main character’s reluctance: he is avoiding love. HE WANTS TO LITERALLY KILL LOVE AND THOSE WHO CAN LOVE.

Questa storia che senso non ha/This story that makes no sense 

Svanirà questa notte assieme alle stelle/Will vanish tonight along with the stars

The rage is easily switching with sadness. Here we have the REAL reason of his words: the fear of losing love.

After that we have an evolution: The realization of

HOW HE NEEDS LOVE, HOW HE NEEDS THE ONE HE LOVES, THE ONE HE IS SINGING FOR.

Se potessi vederti/If I could see you
Dalla speranza nascerà/From hope
L’eternità/Eternity will be born
Stammi vicino/Stay close to me
Non te ne andare/Don’t go
Ho paura di perderti/I’m afraid of losing you

He is showing his fear of losing his own lover not avoiding it anymore.

Le tue mani, le tue gambe/Your hands, your legs
Le mie mani, le mie gambe/My hands, my legs
I battiti del cuore/The heartbeats
Si fondono tra loro/Are fusing together

There it is a SEXUAL ALLUSION: a very intense physical contact between the two guys that involves a literal FUSION OF SPIRITS.

Partiamo insieme/Let’s leave together
Ora sono pronto/Now I’m ready

Now the main character is ready. HE WANT HIS LOVER FOREVER; TO STAY WITH HIM FEARLESS.

The song at this point ends. So After the analysis we can surely say:
THIS IS A LOVE STORY BETWEEN TWO MEN: THE SINGER AND HIS FEELINGS FOR A GUY HE LOVES.

Now what about the implication of the song can relate Victuuri?

I think it’s pretty evident how this song expresses their relationship. The first episode of Yuri on Ice begins with Yuuri watching Viktor skating for him “Stay Close to me”. And “Stay Close to me” is the song that led to Viktor noticing Yuuri.

By the way… the last song in Yuri on Ice CD that will be released in December is a duet of Stay Close to me. Will we have a pair skating exhibition?? 😉
