The Miniature Schnauzer only comes in three recognized colors (black, black and silver, and salt and pepper) for AKC conformation. However, the AKC does also register non-standard colors, such as liver and parti, as purebred Miniature Schnauzers. These non-standard colors are not eligible for conformation shows but can compete in all other AKC events. The Miniature Schnauzer was bred down from the Standard Schnauzer through breeding with smaller breeds such as the Affenpinscher, Miniature Pinscher, and Miniature Poodle. This introduced not only the genes for smaller size, but also genes for colors not seen in the Standard Schnauzer such as liver.
