A few thoughts on Russian nicknames

maimerart:

1. Yes, Russians use them a lot, but only in deeply established relationships.
If Victor and Yuuri are not in an established relationship, Victor bombarding him with zolotse&solnyshko is a little strange and too extra even for him XD If you want to use those in a fic, make sure the situation is appropriate.

2. As long as they’re speaking English, I think Victor would in fact use English nicknames like ‘Love’ or ‘my dear Yuuri’ or something else that fits his characterisation in your fic! It’s hard to switch between languages quicky (“english-english-solnyshko-english-english”), because the pronounciation differs A LOT and your tongue is going to fail you if you’re not a genius of articulation. xD

It’s not only the pronounciation that makes switching difficult, especially in the same sentence, but the process of thinking. When I start speaking in English, I also think in English, and when I think in English, no Russian words pop up in my head. Russian just disappears, and it takes an effort to switch back. It’s much easier to stick to one language in your speech. And there are enough sweet words in English which Victor could express his huge love with 🙂 So instead of “english-english-lyubimiy-english-english” he would 100% say “english-english-my love-english-english”.

3. If Victor decides to use a Russian word or a phrase, I don’t think it would be in vain. Quite the contrary, actually: it would be intimate, sacramental even, it would express something that English can’t convey for him.  He would make a pause and say it softly, slowly, right in Yuuri’s ear, so that Yuuri could understand it without knowing the translation and feel the vibes with his skin and heart, you know? I imagine English is an everyday means of communication for them used in all kinds of situations, but Russian or Japanese are only for special occasions to express very special emotions. You should avoid inserting these languages randomly in the dialogues.

It seems that these two words – zolotse and solnyshko – are the favorites of the English fandom. At least I have seen them more often than other Russian words on AO3. Zolotse means gold, and solnyshko means sun, both nouns contain suffixes of endearment  and sound cute (in Russian not only personal names, but also most nouns, adjectives and adverbs can have “cute” derivatives). Victor might use them, why not, if the author sees him using such words. But you’d almost never encounter those in Russian fics… I think Victor is less sweet in Russian fics in general. For some reason there are many fics exploring his “dark Russian side” and his flaws, and honestly it’s not my cup of tea xD But even in fluffy fics he doesn’t use such words much as compared to English fics. Here is a little list of what I have seen Russian authors using:
Moy Yuuri (my Yuuri) – мой Юри
Miliy (dear, sweet) – милый (may be used as an adj or noun)
Lyubimiy (beloved, my love) – любимый (may be used as an adj or noun)
Moya radost (my joy) – моя радость
Solnyshko (sun) – солнышко
Lapochka (cutie) – лапочка
The first three tender ways of addressing are the most neutral and fit all situations, but the last three may be too cheesy, banal even. Or may not. It depends on the situation and the context, on the talent of an author. In my own 78k Russian fic I used only “my Yuuri” and “miliy Yuuri”.

These nicknames are very common in Russian, but it’s a very creative language and due to those endearment suffixes technically any noun or adjective you want can turn into a sweet nickname. I rather think Victor would use the creative ones, something unusual but meaningful!

Sometimes unexpected pet names are awesome if there is some explanation behind it. For example, in Blackbird Victor calls Yuuri moya iskorka (my sparklet), and it is so so so good in that story, so right! This is just genuis! Not cheesy or strange, but very romantic, 100% believable and full of meaning! I was extremely delighted to encounter that one!
But if you want something like that, you totally shouldn’t use Google Translate xD You need somebody to explain to you all connotations of the word you want to use. The vibes of this word in the Russian language.

I personally also like the word “rodnoy” – it is “dear” with a family feel to it. It sounds like “you’re my family” or “my soul mate”. Like “you’re in my blood/soul”. It’s more than just emotions, it’s some deeper connection that is beyond them. But it’s not an easy one to pull off in a text. This must be a serious text, then this word, whispered by Victor, would become pure magic ❤
And I also like “svet ochei moih” (the light of my eyes). This is an old Russian way to address a beloved man, very sublime, poetic, archaic, and MUCH harder to pull off. But it’s… beautiful

TBC ❤

If this shits cheap I’m buying 20 pounds of it and making cosplay armor.

Pics of some finished shit?

I remember this stuff in product design class. Best shit ever.

little-dragneel WE NEED THIS!!

COULD YOU IMAGINE THE COSPLAY SHIT ONE COULD DO WITH THIS????

Hey guys, just wanted to butt in here.

This is exactly the same stuff as Instamorph. And guess what? Instamorph is actually cheaper. A 400g (gram) bag of Plastimake is $30 (Can you say ouch?) Where as a 12 ounce jar of Instamorph is only $17. Why is this important? 12 ounces =  roughly 340 grams. That’s almost that same amount, but wayyyy cheaper. Not only that, but it seems Plastimake is currently out of stock? Further, Instamorph also has colour packets  for $12, and Plastimake’s are $15.

I’m not saying Plastimake is bad, i’m just saying if you aren’t exactly rich, it’s good to have a cheaper alternative that’s just as good.

There’s your daily dose of marketing info for the day, happy crafting! 😀

I wanted to add that not only can you use this stuff straight up (and there are quite a few companies out there making it now at different price points), you can ALSO use it to make homemade Worbla, which is way cheaper than the stuff you can buy online for armor and other crafting (all you really need is some flour, the moldable pellets, and heat to make it)

@ace-of-the-woods is this relevant to your interests?

In the 80′s when I was a kid this material caught on for a while under the name “fantastic plastic” and came in rectangular sheets of various colors and even patterns and I wondered what the heck ever happened to it

I DIDNT KNOW THIS EXISTED! My broke ass be crying about worbla WHEN WE HAVE THIS?

Part I (Jump Identification)  ||  Part II (Combination Jumps)  ||  Part III (Spin Identification) || Part IV (Steps Identification)

Figure skating turns and steps can be identified by the marks produced by the skater’s blades on the ice when the turns or steps are executed.

The counter, rocker, bracket, three turn, loop, twizzle, choctaw and mohawk are turns commonly used in figure skating step sequences. They are “turns” because they enable the skater to change directions.

Check out this amazing Youtube channel for slow-mo videos of different steps and turns and this other wonderful video identifying all the steps, turns and other elements in Yuzuru’s Chopin Ballade program.

raw-fed-pets:

All dogs share the same basic digestive system despite the range of physical variations (and attitudes) across different breeds. Every dog is designed to eat a raw animal-based diet, from the Chihuahua to the Great Dane. Breed-specific dog food brands are simply a marketing gimmick aimed at playing on the pet owner’s emotions, and their desire to feed their pet the best possible diet.

I don’t think that dogs need an animal-based diet. If done right they can be vegan and not contribute to the murdering of innocent animals. We’ve adapted and domesticated them enough to do so. They’ve evolved to live without meat just like us.

200% incorrect. Vegan diets are carbohydrate-based. Carbohydrates are inflammatory, feed cancer (glucose), contribute to periodontal disease (leading to systemic organ failure, eg heart), cause insulin spikes leading to a multitude of other issues in the long-term (thyroid, liver, diabetes, heart disease) and also cause pancreatic problems due to extreme stress on the pancreas (secreting heavy loads of carb enzymes over a long period of time). The low moisture content coupled with high plant protein may also cause renal failure in the long term. The preservatives used may also be linked to cancer (BHA, BHT etc), and these diets also skew the omega3/6 ratio, causing further inflammation (linked to cancer again). They cause urine alkalinity leading to urinary problems such as crystals, blockages and UTI’s.

Brief into to dog anatomy/physiology:

– Stomach PH: Their highly acidic stomach is designed for eliminating harmful bacteria and breaking down bone into a gel-like substance. Humans have a much more alkaline stomach acid which is why we would struggle to digest raw bone.

-Digestive Enzymes: Higher level of proteases to break down animal protein. High bile load to help push through bacteria.

-Dental Anatomy: Sharp pointed teeth designed for ripping and tearing flesh and bones.Dogs do not chew their food as we do, they are wired to swallow chunks quickly as a basic survival instinct.

-Jaws: Dogs also have strong jaws that physically cannot move sideways (like your own can). This sideways grinding action is a feature that allows pre-digestion of plant material. Again, dogs rip off chunks and swallow them whole.

-Lack of Salivary Amylase: Omnivores have this for pre-digestion of carbohydrates. Dogs and cats do not. The canine pancreas secretes amylase as a backup, however this does not mean they should be fed a high carbohydrate diet every day for a lifetime. Processed food (incl vegan) is 40-70% carbohydrate.

-Lysozyme: Instead of amylase, dogs have lysozyme in their saliva which is an antibacterial. This may be useful for destroying any harmful bacteria in carrion/rotten food/feces, as well as wound cleaning.

-Gut length: The canine gut is short in length which is because flesh must be pushed through quickly. It does not need to sit and ferment, as this could allow bacteria to multiply to harmful levels. Note that plant eating animals have a long digestive tract and even multiple stomach chambers in order for plant material to be slowly broken down by the necessary enzymes.

-Nutrient profiles. Dogs have 0% biological requirement for carbohydrates. They gain every single essential nutrient from a prey based diet such as Whole Prey/Prey Model. Vegan diets are full of processed lab-made vitamins and minerals. Many vitamin pre-mixes are made in china and shipped to the country of manufacture.

All in all, dogs will survive on a high carbohydrate diet but it will cause systemic effects eventually. Similar to smoking, a junk food diet affects every dog differently and some may be affected more severely than others, and in different time spans. You can also expect high vet fees in the form of dental cleanings, dental surgeries and various health problem later on in life.

It is not recommended that you feed your pet the equivalent of a big mac for the entirety of its life. This is essentially what kibble and vegan diets are. Evolution has changed the appearance and even the behaviour of your dog, but their digestive system is still geared towards meat. Basically, you are paying money to have a company slowly kill your pet from the inside out.

0/10, Not Recommended.

Hard science here for anyone who needs to shut down a “vegan pet owner.” It’s abuse. Feed your animal the substances they evolved to eat or do not own an animal, it’s as simple as that.

Vegan dog and cat owners who try to force their pets to be vegan are absolute trash and should be dragged as hard as possible for their dangerously bad beliefs.

NONE OF YOUR FREAKING MOVIES GET IT RIGHT: a guide to Russian names.

silvenhorror:

This post was inspired by years and years of watching movies, series, and fanfics royally and hilariously fuck up the use of names in the Russian language, coming to the point where, if I see another pair of best buddies call each other by full name, I will shoot something, I swear to God.

There are 3 ways people in Russia address each other, and they denote different levels of formality, and the relationship between the speakers. You should know this stuff if you wanna write anything that includes Russian people talking to each other, because if you get it wrong, it will be, alternatively, hilarious or cringe-worthy. I have seen soo much of this in fanfic it’s not funny anymore. So read up y’all!

1. Name + Patronymic.

A patronym, or patronymic, is a component of a surname based on the given name of one’s father, grandfather or an even earlier male ancestor. (thank you, Wikipedia!) A patronymic is not a middle name. Russian people don’t have middle names, period. But we all have patronymics!

Use: formal

Used towards: your teacher, your big boss, a senior citizen with whom you don’t have a close relationship (say, your classmate’s grandma), your doctor, any kind of professor or scholar when you address them formally, a client when you’re in the service industry/work with people (not always, but very often).

Example: Ivan Petrovich, Sergey Vladimirovich, Anna Anatolyevna, Maria Sergeevna, etc

If you’re not in a group and you want to learn how to write characters in that group respectfully and realistically

shiraglassman:

1. Read media by people in the group. Fiction, nonfiction, blog posts – anything from “how my day went today” to 300-page epic adventure novels to history pamphlets. (By people in the group, not just about them. This is important.)

2. Google “How not to write a [the group] character” because the odds are that at least a few people in the group have written blog entries rattling off all their least favorite tropes representing their demographic. I’ve seen lesbians writing about how not to write lesbians, Asians talking about offensively-written Asians, etc. Refraining from writing the overused, negative, one-dimensional tropes listed in posts like this is probably a good start.
