In case you didn’t get to watch the figure skating events at the Olympics, but you’d like to check out the male singles events but don’t really have 4 hours on your hands to watch the Short Program and then another 4 hours to watch the Free Skate, I decided to compile a list of figure skaters I think you should absolutely check out if you want to see a variety of great performance and not just the ones of the most famous skaters.
I’m not including Hanyu, Chan, Chen, Fernandez and Uno here because I expect that you already know of them and have therefore either already watched their performances or are planning to do so or maybe aren’t interested for whatever reason. This list will be a selection of the less famous, less media-covered skaters out there – because there are some beautiful skaters out there that the casual fan may not know simply because they’re not internationally popular.
All of these programs should amount to a total of around 50 minutes of watch-time (though obviously if you also watch the big names then that’ll take longer).
As a rule of thumb, I think the Free Skates of all of these skaters are worth watching, but also feel free to pick and choose based on your preferences. (Also keep in mind that some of these didn’t qualify to the Free Skate event at the Olympics.)
Also do keep in mind that you won’t find any of these on YouTube at the moment, however, if you check this site and find your country you should find a way to legally stream the events on demand wherever you live. If you’re in Europe, I especially recommend the current Eurosport deal, I got it and I’ve been really happy with the service (when will Eurosport sponsor me for all the good press I give them lol).
Note that this isn’t a ranking – I listed them chronologically based on their start times.
Without further ado, here’s my list:
Chafik Besseghier – great energy, awesome steps and choreography, I really like his “taxi driver” theme and his personality on the ice. Honestly it’s a shame he doesn’t do better because more people should see him
Vincent Zhou – skating to “Chasing Cars” in his SP and just giving wonderful performances in both of his programs, he’s a must-watch
Matteo Rizzo – skating to Il Volo in his SP and I’m a slut for everyone who skates to Il Volo because I think their music really lends itself to emotional/intense performances so including them is a must
Michael Christian Martinez – the only Filipino skater, sadly didn’t qualify to FS but worth checking out in my opinion
Han Yan – skating to “A Thousand Years”, beautiful artistry
Julian Zhi Jie
Yee – the only Malaysian skater,
sadly didn’t qualify to FS but worth checking out in my opinion
Morisi Kvitelashvili – skating to “Feeling Good” by Michael Buble, and well, what’s more to say – it felt good
Michal Brezina – gave a really clean performance in his SP and I honestly found it quite impressive, considering he’s not a young skater anymore
Junhwan Cha – the hope of South Korea, training under Brian Orser with Hanyu and Fernandez. He’s really impressive despite being only 16. (He’s under Brian Orser – you know he must be good)
Jorik Hendrickx – skating to “Je Suis Malade” and here I have similar reasons to Il Volo –
I’m a slut for everyone who skates to
emotional French songs because they lend themselves to intense programs so I always find them worth watching, but also I think Jorik’s steps are really captivating and work really well with the music
Daniel Samohin – another one skating to Il Volo (though a different song of theirs than Matteo) so that’s an instant must-watch; I also think he’s interesting competition to Alexei Bychenko – his teammate
Adam Rippon – must I say more than his name? You should already know you need to see him. LGBT icon and beautiful skater, that’s all the most important info.
Dmitri Aliev – skating to a waltz in a very prince-like costume, he’s truly enthralling and I really like him – his SP at the Olympics was amazing and I think he’s an absolute must-watch
Keiji Tanaka – the Japanese skater that people don’t talk about nearly enough, has a lot of personal appeal and his own artistry and just the way he skates is a pleasure to watch. He’s also skating to the tune of an electric guitar and we don’t have nearly enough of that in figure skating so this is welcome variety (also his SP costume looks similar to Yuuri’s FS costume but if anyone asks, you didn’t hear this from me)
Alexei Bychenko – the “old man” of men’s singles but experiencing what is probably the best season of his life and it’s hard to not cheer for him. He’s also skating to Hava Nagila – a Jewish folk song which is pleasant diversity and he actually looks like he’s enjoying himself which is also great (and is weirdly rare for figure skaters).
Deniss Vasiljevs – probably my favorite skater, amazing energy, beautiful steps, beautiful spins (as you’d expect from Stephane Lambiel’s student), he’s only inconsistent with jumps, but he’s a joy to watch regardless
Boyang Jin – aka the amazing figure skater most forgotten by the media. If you haven’t seen any of his performances – you’re missing out. Such a joy to watch.
I do hope that one day all of these will be on YouTube so that I could make a playlist of them and make it easy to watch for new fans but this will have to do for now.
So what about you? What were some of your favorite performances during these Olympics? I might make a separate post for ladies and ice dance but for now, let’s discuss here!
All in all, I thought all skaters and their programs were great and worth watching in some way but I don’t expect most people to have enough time to watch all of them so hopefully this was an interesting overview of males singles at the 2018 Olympics!
Evgenia Medvedeva – 81.61 (WR until later) – clean jumps. The 3F+3T was clean but she didn’t do a Rippon on the 3T like usual. The 3Lo was so nice. The 2A had a slightly rough landing – the running edge wasn’t as smooth as usual, but it was still clean.
Satoko Miyahara – 75.94 – 3Lz+3T clean! 3Lo was super nice. 2A was fast and clean. I always love the amount of detail in this program’s choreo. It’s such a treat to watch in a field focused on technique. The final spin is probably my favorite in the field – it doesn’t travel at all! Magnificent.
Kaetlyn Osmond – 78.87 – 3F+3T was nice. She did a flutz next, but had nice running edge. That 2A was huge. It’s such a fun and sassy program. I love how BIG her jumps are too.
Alina Zagitova – 82.92 (WR broke Evgenia’s) 3Lz+3Lo clean, 3F Rippon was great, 2A was nice – small, but it does have a short setup so that’s nice. (What was up with Eteri??? She didn’t even smile or congratulate Alina…)
Carolina Kostner – 3F+2T clean, 3Lo hand down, 2A was glorious, her step sequence was arresting. I’m going to miss seeing these kind of skating skills.
Maria Sotskova – 63.86 – fall on the 3Lz (looked underrotated?), 3F+3T good, 2A nicely done. I like her lines and extension.
Kaori Sakamoto – 73.18 (personal best)All clean! That was so nice to watch. Her 3F+3T was so smooth, then the 3Lo was nicely weaved into the choreo, and the 2A was like turn, BAM! and done.
Mirai Nagasu – 66.93 fall on 3A and double-footed, but fully rotated, 3F+3T very nice, 3Lo had a wobble coming out but then held the running edge well.
Gabrielle Daleman – 68.90 3T+3T hand down, but the other jumps were clean, and she did well with the mood of the program
Karen Chen – 65.90 fell on 3Lz combination, added the 2T combo to 3Lo in the second half, 2A was good. I love how well the program flows. It ended before I knew it and wished it could have continued on.
Elizabet Tursynbaeva – 57.95 2Lo step out, 3S+3T clean, 2A clean. It felt kind of forced? Although I liked how she kept up with the speed of the music in her step sequence.
Dabin Choi – 67.77 (personal best!) 3Lz+3T, 3F clean and so smooth, 2A clean. The jumps flowed well and the presentation was wonderful.
Jorik Hendrickx – he really performed that well. He lived the music.
Keegan Messing – Mmm, there were some mistakes – pops – but he did them well enough so that they blended into the program. It was a spirited skate overall.
Vincent Zhou – 192.16 – 276.69 YEEEEESSS. Fell on the 4F but the other Quads were there. It was great overall. An Olympic Performance.
Mikhail Kolyada – man that was rough. The first half was good, but then there was fall after fall.
Michal Brezina – Messed up both 4S (doubled one of them), but his 3A were both so wonderful. It was a well performed program – he really fit the music – and I hope he can be satisfied by it as his last skate.
Adam Rippon – (I made a separate post) I’m SO PROUD of him. That was a gorgeous performance. Three clean skates out of three skates! What a wonderful Olympic experience for him.
Nathan Chen (USA) lands six fully-rotated quads in his free skate to Mao’s Last Dancer, the first skater in history to do so. He scored a personal best 215.08 points for the segment.
Alexei Bychenko – such a nice program! It was clean (except for a popped 3A–>2A) and he really skated to the music. This is what an Olympic Program looks like.
Daniel Samohin – good skate, and shows that he has promise
Nathan Chen – I made a separate post. He had a Redemption Skate. Yolo 6th quad is now a thing.
Misha Ge – I made a separate post. He made me tear up. Touching and absolutely beautiful.
Jun Hwan Cha – That 3Lz+3t was huge, 4S fall – his 3A were both nice. It was a sweet skate overall and I look forward to seeing him mature in the fututre.
Brendan Kerry – rough landings on some jumps. Not the kind of skate you hope for.
Yuzu- I did a tiny shout-out right after his skate, and will do a proper gushing later. 111.68 as the second-highest SP score ever (he holds the World Record). There was the tiniest nitpicky thing on the opening 4S (which is probably why it didn’t break the record), the 3A was perfection, the landing on the 4T+3T(Rippon) was so good. He drew everyone in. He felt so reassuring.
Oh man, Nathan. That was rough. 82.27 placed in 13th place (currently 17th). 4Lz fall. 4T not in combination so it’s considered invalid, and 3A step-out and hand down.
Kolyada – popped 4Lz into a triple, fall on 4T, 3A step-out (iirc? It was bad), almost fell out of the last moments of the spin.
Shoma – 104.17 – very good skate. The 4F had a low free leg coming out of it, but it had the revolutions. The 4T+3T was nice. The 3A managed to hold on to but the running edge was a bit wobbly and his free leg was a bit low here as well. The last spin was on-point and he really filled the ice with his presentation.
Javier – 107.58 – he brought it. I’m so proud. 4T+3T was spot on, his 4S was landed without doubt, and his 3A was super clean as well. I was just thinking about how this feels after his last Olympics. This was so heartwarming to see.
Boyang – 103.32 – clean skate, very nice quads. 4Lz+3T was well executed but the running edge was short. 4T was nice if a tiny bit choppy on the landing. 3A was spot on.
Jorik Hendrickx – 84.74, a very emotive performance and a solid skate
Daniel Samohin – 80.69 4T+3T good, 4S with a slight odd landing but he was clean, 3A fall. The ending was amusing – he started facing the wrong way and had to switch around to face the judges.
Michal Brezina – 85.15 – 4S+3T good if a bit muscled, 3A clean, spins are so nicely matched to the music
Jun Hwan Cha – 83.43 – YAAAAY CLEAN, 3F+3T clean but the 3F looked a bit off in the air(still fully rotated and received +GOE though), 3A very good, 3Lz good. It was a fun program!
Paul Fentz – 74.73 I loved the energy of the skate.
Misha -Ge – 83.90 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Ah. Ah, aaaahhhhhhhhh MISHA. You could tell that he felt everything. No one expresses like Misha. It was so good that I just completely didn’t even care about jumps. It was clean. Shaky landing on 3A, but he landed it, and the other triples were solid. It was just such a good skate. He leaves no detail behind. The last spin was so fast and fluid in the position changes. He uses the music so well.
