“Prince Victor, I am asking you to dance.” “It’s raining,” Victor objected, even as he drew closer to the line separating the dry stone that he stood on and the wet ground beneath Yuuri. “So?” Rain fell onto Yuuri. Onto his hair, his face, his shoulders, his clothing, onto the hand he held outstretched in offer. Then, rain fell onto Victor.
I was thinking of Victor Nikiforov and wondering if he went through the same thing I did a few years ago.
I lived by myself for 6 years. So it was: go to college – go to work – buy something to eat on the way home – have dinner by myself in front of the TV – wash that single plate and that single glass – go to bed. A few years later and there was no college anymore, but all the rest stayed the same.
One thing I’ve always loved eating was frozen lasagna. But I can’t eat too much at once, so I’d always buy an individual lasagna.
Then I met someone who turned my world around and we moved in together
some time later. One day after work I dropped by the market to buy something for dinner, as I was in no mood for cooking, and went straight to the frozen food section. I automatically grabbed an individual lasagna. But then it hit me: I had to buy a family-sized lasagna. I had someone to share it with.
And I think of Victor at the market, too. Reaching for an individual lasagna, or just one bucket of ice-cream, or one small bag of chips. Then it hits him. He’s not alone anymore. He smiles and grabs two buckets of ice-cream, or the biggest bag of chips. The family-sized lasagna. Because Yuuri’s at home waiting for him.
